What We Accept

  • Literary fiction and contemporary fiction
  • Science fiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction
  • Historical fiction (non-political, non-sensitive)
  • Culturally focused narratives and cross-cultural storytelling
  • Fiction and documentary novels about social structures, traditions, spiritual orientations, superstitions, and legends
  • Novels about indigenous, tribal, and minority communities
  • Middle-grade and young adult fiction with strong cultural identity
  • Narrative nonfiction and memoir (subject to compliance review)

What We Do Not Accept

  • Political fiction, political commentary, or political advocacy
  • Documentary, investigative, or journalistic works
  • Works addressing politically sensitive, controversial, or contested topics
  • Works intended to critique, challenge, or reinterpret government policy or recent historical narratives

Submission Requirements

Both tracks require the following materials before JLLA begins evaluation:

Traditional Track

  • Short author biography
  • Cover letter introducing the author, the work, and its relevance to JLLA’s mission
  • Manuscript (complete or partial, depending on genre)
  • Author statement explaining intent, themes, and cultural context
  • Synopsis (1โ€“2 pages: plot, structure, and key themes)
  • Confirmation that full world rights are available

Self-Publishing Track

  • Short author biography
  • Brief cover letter introducing the author, the work, and target English-language audience
  • Complete manuscript (all genres)
  • Author statement explaining intent, themes, cultural context, and target readership
  • Synopsis (1 page: plot/premise and primary genre category)
  • Confirmation that world English rights are clear and no prior English publication exists

Financial Terms

  • JLLA charges no fees at any stage of evaluation or representation
  • All production costs (translation, editing, cover design) are advanced by JLLA and recouped only from earned royalties โ€” never charged upfront
  • Authors are never responsible for any expense they have not explicitly pre-approved in writing
  • Traditional Track: 80% of net receipts to the author; 20% commission to JLLA
  • Self-Publishing Track: 70% of net qualifying royalties to the author; 30% to JLLA
